While Suzi O’Neill was working in Thailand more than 10 years ago, she was entrusted with a soft toy being passed around the world in a school project with the aim that it would be returned one day.
When she packed her bag for Australia, the toy went with her and was handed on after she arrived in South Africa. That was the last she saw of it, but, as her travels continued, Suzi kept thinking about the possibility of creating a companion for what she calls the Journey of Life.
“I knew from my travels that memories fade and details of the places you go and the people you meet are lost for ever unless you record them with a photo and a page in a diary,” she recalls.
Suzi will always be grateful to her grandfather for doing just that. When she was young, he kept family adventures alive by taking photos and making diary entries.
In her desire to encourage families to follow suit, she created Jofli Bear as a travel companion who can also be a children’s and an educational toy.
A Jofli starter kit includes the cuddly bear, complete with hat and scarf, a backpack with shoulder strap and the all-important logbook ring binder with pages and a pen.
Suzi hopes families will record their adventures -- maybe a day’s outing, a summer holiday or a special event -- in words and pictures to relive the happy times in later years.
Although the backpack is detachable and can be used as a bag if you decide to leave Jofli at home, he’ll be much happier strapped in and taken along for the ride. Anyone packing for a holiday can also ensure that Jofli has his own wardrobe as a range of clothing is available.
Through Jofli, Suzi would also like to see youngsters explore their surroundings and abilities. He is already being used in schools in a variety of ways. As Suzi puts it: “He engages with children in a way that only bears can!” Those buying a bear for a classroom setting can acquire activity sheets corresponding to KS1 and KS2 study programmes.
